2004 Alion Ribera del Duero
"Bodegas Alion was started by the renowned estate of Vega Sicilia in 1991. Grapes are sourced from vineyards next to the winery and from Vega Sicilia’s own vineyards at Valbuena. Eighteen hectares of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) form the actual Alion estate. The 2004 Alion is inky purple-colored with an alluring perfume of toasty oak, lavender, violets, mineral, blackberry, and blueberry compote. This is followed by a full-bodied, rich, opulent, wine with incipient complexity, and notes of licorice, mocha, and espresso emerging on the palate. The lengthy finish is pure and persistent. Give it 3-5 years in the cellar and drink it through 2025." 96 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #177 (JULY 2008)

The 1996 Unico seems more developed aromatically than the 1995 with elements of coffee and mocha but not quite the richness of fruit of the 1995. It is more supple on the palate but with less depth. It can be enjoyed now and over the next 20 years

Red Wine Napa Valley, Rutherford
The 1996 growing season was characterized by several dramatic shifts in weather - requiring great flexibility and care in managing the vineyards. An early bud break was followed by a cool, wet spring, which reduced cluster size. The cool spring turned into a hot summer, bringing early veraison. Late August and September saw a dramatic cooling trend, allowing the final, crucial ripening to proceed under optimal conditions. The long hang time coupled with small berry clusters resulted in intensely flavored grapes with a high skin to juice ratio. Because our goal is to pick each variety and each block at individual maturity, the 1996 harvest lasted 28 days at Quintessa. 91." WS 90." WE
